The Incredible Photography of Gavin Bond

February 19, 2009

It brings me great joy when i see breathtaking and well-thought-of photography; photography that showcases not just the technical skills of the photographer but the creative concept and meaning that brings about the actual visual piece. Such is the photography of Gavin Bond.

Gavin Bond do not just take photographs, he takes them exquisitely, with colors that are vivid and exuberant and with a creative eye that elevates the regular portrait photography into something that tells a story and shows the quirky and fun side of the subject he captures. He is never afraid to experiment with his subjects and to bring-out and henceforth capture their essence which are normally concealed by the blinding lights of celebrity.

Taken from the Gavin Bond Biography:

Gavin Bond is man behind the lens for much of the world’s best fashion reportage. A graduate of London infamous St Martin’s Lane, he spent much of the ’90s backstage at the fashion world’s biggest runway shows and hottest after parties.

His portfolio bursts with spur of the moment, never to be captured again images of some of the world’s most recognised models and celebrities. He recently undertook a reportage project backstage for the Victoria’s Secret Lingerie Show, known as the world’s most flamboyant and colourful catwalk event. The images were subsequently published in GQ to critical acclaim.

Bond’s magic is in showing the flip side to the persona the viewer grows used to seeing. Perhaps it is the way the subject stands, or being caught applying lip gloss moments before hitting the stage, Bond enlightens our understanding the of fashion and celebrity world’s with the frankness and speed of his unrestricted lens.

When he is not spending time with the world’s hottest models, Bond is a hugely in demand editorial photographer and works for GQ, Elle, Tatler and Vanity Fair amongst others.

Visit his online portfolio and see more of his beautiful photographs of some of the most famous and prominent Hollywood stars:

Great Stop-Motion Video from Oren Lavie

February 18, 2009

Found this very cool stop-motion video from random browsing blogs in tumblr.com (cool blogs, i must say; i think will have to set my own one soon). Apparently i have too much time on my hands today due perhaps to my self-inflicted depression. I have been having these very low moments since the beginning of the year. Mostly, i have these moments when i feel very alone, helpless and a failure. Fact is i’m overly critical to my self and i have this pre-conceived notion of what my life ought to be, thus, when down time comes, i regress into depression and throws my self farther down.

But this post is not mainly about my failures. It is about the awesomeness of this video and this cool artist that i have found out to be in the iTunes Store as well. So click on his MySpace blog to know more about Oren Lavie (Hmmmm… is he related to Lisa Lavie? The Canadian YouTube Diva sensation? More of her in another post).

Taken from Oren Lavie’s MySpace:

Oren Lavie is a songwriter of curly brown hair, whisperish voice, green eyes and suspiciously cold feet. He was born in 1976, two minutes behind schedule, and has been trying to catch up ever since.

In 2007 Oren’s debut album, THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SEA, was released in Europe. If you happen to live in that particular continent – buy it around the corner, behind the bakery and next to the flower shop.

In January 2008 Oren has started his own label in the US, named it, then renamed it, changed it again and finally decided to call it A Quarter Past Wonderful. He then released the album on i-tunes US.
Later in the month the album has been featured on the i-tunes Singer/Songwriter Spotlight, after which it auspiciously climbed to No. 30 on the charts.
Shortly after that, the album track ‘Her Morning Elegance’ was chosen to feature on a US Chevrolet TV commercial. The aforementioned author, who has never owned a car in his life, and who has diligently ignored the invention of Television, could not stop giggling for days.
With a song in his heart he continues to take the bus.

black1-1.jpg
I need dual protection for my Macbook (white) so after much research, i found this: the InCase Hardshell case. Very similar to the speck but more sleek and well-made. Problem is, i can’t find any in all the apple shops that i have visited here in Manila. I guess i just i have to wait until a genie arrives. : ) It’s $49.95 or roughly Php 2,300+ and of course, i’d prefer the black one.

The Hardshell Case for MacBook offers durable hardcase construction for excellent notebook coverage. Featuring a frosted hardshell exterior, soft-touch coating, raised rubber feet, thermal vents, and trouble-free access to all features, this is the most sophisticated and discreet option in notebook protection. Available in Black, Frost, Red and Magenta/Red Plum. This is also available for the newly released Macbook/Macbook Pro Unibody Models.

Features

  • Excellent notebook protection
  • Exterior rubberized soft-touch coating
  • Precise cut out features allow trouble-free access to magnetic power cable, headphone and microphone input jacks, CD ROM drive, battery level check button, and all side ports
  • Vents and rubber feet elevate notebook away from surface, allowing notebook’s internal fans to circulate air more freely
  • Simple to use and easy to clean

I Recommend: Broken Sky (El Cielo Dividido)

February 16, 2009

“we lose ourselves in the hearts of others…”

A burst of lyrical dedication to love, Broken Sky, is definitely one of the most memorable gay themed films i have watched in years. Cunningly and with much care, the movie’s affecting story of young gay love, evolves with almost no dialogues between the protagonists, with only their raw emotions and expressions as tools of interaction plus music/songs that help define particular moments. Despite this, you are engrossed and get involve with the characters, feeling for them and hoping that true love prevails in the end.

The movie is a visual poetry, an erotic and passionate journey into the tumultuous love triangle of three attractive twenty-something men.

Gerardo (Miguel Angel Hoppe) is a sensitive man who is deeply in love with longtime boyfriend Jonas (Fernando Arroyo). When Jonas becomes infatuated with a stranger he recently met at a local nightclub, heartbroken Gerardo soon seeks solace in the arms of sympathetic Sergio (Alejandro Rojo). Though his lovelorn pains are palpable, Gerardo remains incapable of ending his romance with Jonas despite the rapidly deepening chasm that seems to be splitting the once-happy pair apart. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
