A burst of lyrical dedication to love, Broken Sky, is definitely one of the most memorable gay themed films i have watched in years. Cunningly and with much care, the movie’s affecting story of young gay love, evolves with almost no dialogues between the protagonists, with only their raw emotions and expressions as tools of interaction plus music/songs that help define particular moments. Despite this, you are engrossed and get involve with the characters, feeling for them and hoping that true love prevails in the end.
The movie is a visual poetry, an erotic and passionate journey into the tumultuous love triangle of three attractive twenty-something men.
Gerardo (Miguel Angel Hoppe) is a sensitive man who is deeply in love with longtime boyfriend Jonas (Fernando Arroyo). When Jonas becomes infatuated with a stranger he recently met at a local nightclub, heartbroken Gerardo soon seeks solace in the arms of sympathetic Sergio (Alejandro Rojo). Though his lovelorn pains are palpable, Gerardo remains incapable of ending his romance with Jonas despite the rapidly deepening chasm that seems to be splitting the once-happy pair apart. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Who would have thought that this beautiful, super skinnymowdel (excuse the “w”, i just have to enunciate the “mow….del!” part as it seems appropriate)of a woman was once trapped inside the hunky body of a man named Rustom Padilla who is now history (according to, yes, themowdelherself, she killed Rustom). Couldn’t blame the girl really. After all, the guy trapped her inside of him for what, almost 30 years (hmmm…. not accurate, i am not aware of his/her age). What a shame; this Rustom guy, alienating and depriving the world of her beauty and grace! Why, even some of our local actresses would look like rags beside her!
Ladies and very gentlemen, the before and after of Bebe Gandanghari: The artist formerly known as Rustom Padilla.
Rustom Padilla: The hunk actor
Bebe Gandanghari: The mowdel actress
(Are we going to witness a “Transamerica” moment soon???”)
Ang Lihim Ni Antonio(Antonio’s Secret) is the most intriguing gay-themed Filipino Indie film that i have watched recently. Intriguing, because to me:
1. The cinematic attack is schizophrenic (the movie seemed to be confused if it wanted to be light or heavy).
2. The story is cliche in every sense of the word (until the very disturbing ending).
3. The script is real life but it becomes a bit dragging at some parts.
And yet the film compels you to give it a second-look, it interests you and makes most of the earlier gay-themed Indie films poorly made and haphazardly done.
It is the outstanding ensemble cast performance and the beautiful setting and cinematography that becomes the movies salvation. All the actors in the cast were perfectly placed and chosen based on how they really fit into the characters, and mind you, most of them are virtually unknown names; so one can see that the producers/director aimed this to be one of the movies strongest points as I found out that rigorous screening (why, even the Philippines’ Indie Film Prince, Coco Martin did not make the cut) and workshops were done prior to the actual making of the film.
It is always a pleasant feeling whenever i find a great and meaningful movie. But sometimes, the opposite happens: this great and meaningful movie finds you, speaks to you; and you are taken aback, overwhelmed, affected, changed.
I did not plan to watch the Thai filmTheLove of Siam. I thought it was just another gay-themed film where the highlight would be that one hot love scene between the two male protagonist. I did not even think its worthwhile to watch; thus, for the first 30 mins of the film, i did not focus and went on to do my usual computer work.
